Our “all church” multi age, mid-summer festival, Spirit of Summer, celebrates creation and creativity, echoing our summer theme, Prayer, Pen, Pulse & Palette.

Sunday, July 25, 10:45-4:00pm
Art in Chicago. Board the chartered mini-bus for a visit to two smaller jewels among Chicago’s art museums. First, a guided tour of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen, then travel about 4 miles north to the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. Lunch will be on your own. Cost of the excursion, which includes transportation and museum fees, is $40 per person, excluding lunch.
Pre-register by July 18.

Monday, July 26, 7:00-8:30pm
Adults: Art historian and popular lecturer, Michelle Paluch-Mishur, returns to First Church to enlighten us about modern art and the Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Children: (fall’s 1st graders & older) - Pulse and Palette, Part I. Begin the evening exploring the world of music through hand chimes, led by Francy Bearden. Followed by a visual art experience led by Abrakadoodle staff. Acrylic painting on canvas.

Tuesday, July 27, 7:00-8:30pm
Adults: Local sculptor, Fran Volz, will be our guest. Fran will share his experiences as an artist and discuss what inspires his creativity.
Children: Pulse and Palette, Part II. Percussion sets the beat as children begin the evening with a drum circle, led by drum instructor Chris Lavides, and visual arts with Abrakadoodle.

Cost of Monday's & Tuesday's children's events is $5 per child/per day. There is no charge for the Wednesday event. Pre-registration is required through the Registration Station or the Church Office. Child care for younger children available Mon. & Tues. evenings by reservation.

Wednesday, July 28, 6:00pm
A true “pot-luck picnic” in Fellowship Hall; bring your favorite picnic food (homemade or purchased). Lemonade and paper goods provided. After dinner, we’ll enjoy the award winning animated film Wall-E.

Kids’ Summer Book Group
Better than “beach reading” – that’s how one could describe our brand new Summer Book Group! These exciting books have mystery and magic, humor and hi-jinks! All 3rd through 6th graders and their friends are invited to participate. Children can read on their own – or have someone read to them. (Books are available at local libraries.) Start reading! Each Book Group will include discussion of the story and delicious snacks! (Please pre-register at Registration Station so we can plan for food.)

2010 Summer Music Camp:
Lights of Broadway!

August 2 - 6, 5:30-8:30pm, Cost: $40.00 per person
Presented on Sunday, August 8 at 9:30am Worship. Open to those who have completed Kindergarten and above. Led by the staff of Setting the Stage Children’s Theatre, participants will learn songs and choreography from favorite Broadway musicals and consider the faith connections.


Mega Yard Sale
August 7, 8:00am
One day only but volunteers are needed all week to sort and price! Sign up at church, collect saleable items from your family, friends, neighbors. ALL PROCEEDS go to our ministry. Let's make this year's sale a record success!




Kingston Mines Blues
August 13
Come and hear the blues at an authentic Chicago blues club. Join us Friday, August 13 for fellowship and music. Meet at the church at 6:30pm or join us at Kingston Mines in Chicago at 7:30pm (call for location). Two stages of music & a large menu.

Gospel Brunch
August 22
Immediately following worship, head to downtown Chicago for the House of Blues Gospel Brunch.
The show starts at 12:30pm. Adult tickets - $37.50; children’s (ages 6-12) tickets are $22. Children under 6 are free. The ticket price includes lunch, performance, tax, gratuity. Sign up in the church office by Sunday, Aug. 1 so tickets can be purchased.
