Night OWLS Returns

  • First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Not all good things come to an end: Night OWLS (Night Out With Loving Sitters), on hiatus for the pandemic, returns for the 2023-24 season! Night OWLS is a monthly program for families with children with disabilities. Basically, if a child, age 2-12, is eligible for an IEP, they are eligible for Night OWLS. Parents can drop off all of their children (ages 2-12) at the ROC on designated Saturday evenings, from 6-9pm. Children enjoy a pizza supper and supervised activities while parents have an evening to themselves.

What can you do to help make this a successful season? Volunteer to help by contacting Pastor Lynn AND let potentially interested friends and neighbors know that this program exists. Volunteers are required to have a FUMCAH background check; families are required to register in advance.

SrHI Summer Mission Trip 2023
Jun

to Jun 17

SrHI Summer Mission Trip 2023

  • First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This Summer, our SrHI youth will head to St. Louis where we'll be working with Amen St. Louis and immersing ourselves in the city's culture, its justice issues, and the regenerative work going on there that's bringing hope and healing to its people. Our evenings together will be spent having leisurely adventures around the city, making food together, playing games, and deepening those bonds of friendship that only mission trips can forge! We have space to take up to 8 youth and 3 adults. Cost $200.

Get to know Amen St. Louis and the ministries in the city with which we'll be serving:

Lydia's House
lydiashouse.org - Lydia's House provides a place of healing and a voice of hope for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. We'll be helping as needed behind the scenes.

The Green House Venture
greenhousestl.org - “Our mission is to educate, excite, and equip an inclusive population of elementary students to pursue a sustainable world through a hands-on program in bio-science and urban agriculture.” We'll hear about the vision and gardening philosophy and work on the highway embankment farm/garden.

New Roots Urban Farm
newrootsurbanfarm.com - We will be working with Back Farmers in the community and learning about the systemic racism that has led to the racial division in St. Louis, the failure of many urban renewal projects and efforts to reclaim the land and empower the community to become self-sufficient.

Isaiah 58 Ministries
i58ministries.org/ - Isaiah 58 Ministries is a cooperative ministry on the near south side of St. Louis. We meet the needs of low-income individuals through a daily food pantry, twice weekly fresh food distribution, holiday food bags and turkey and ham give-aways, and school supplies.

St. Louis Area Foodbank
stlfoodbank.org - St. Louis' regional food bank, distributing food to pantries all over the metropolitan area. We'll be working in their warehouse or on as needed projects.

First Sunday = Food Sunday

First Sunday = Food Sunday

  • First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Thank you to everyone who supported the All Saints Food Pantry on Pasta Sunday (April) and Cereal Sunday (May). When I delivered the food last month, I met Bruce Ross, the mobile pantry director, and got a little tour. The need for food in our area is great and the Pantry volunteers are enthusiastically working to meet the need. Over 1,000 families are served each month.

Our "food focus" for June is canned meat and fish (tuna, salmon, etc.) and boxed macaroni and cheese. Please add one or more of these items to your cart when you shop. Bruce said that they never have enough canned protein and mac-n-cheese is always popular. Of course, most any non-perishable food is appreciated! Please bring the food with you to worship on Sunday, June 4, or drop it off during office hours on Monday-Thursday.

Volunteers are needed! Please fill out the form below.

  • to help check expiration dates and deliver food to the pantry on the Thursday morning after Food Sunday.

  • to help with the mobile food pantry on Tuesday afternoons, bringing food to area apartment complexes.

Many thanks to all in FUMCAH who care for those who are food insecure. Our ministries of mercy do not solve the worldwide hunger problem, but they do feed hungry people. And people do not "eat in the long run;" in many ways, we all need our daily bread.

Lynn Mikels (she, her, hers)
Pastor of Discipleship
